Making the trip to Goodwill to drop it off is out of the way or you wait for a larger pile. Freecycle folks come to you to pick it up. With today's economy, there are lots and lots of people in need. This is neighbor helping neighbor, and keeps usable items out of the landfills. Have company coming and need an extra table or chair or such? Perfect - most lists will let you post a want a couple of times a month And, you can Freecycle the item back to someone else in need if you do not have the storage space when you are done with it.
Freecycle uses a Yahoo Group mailing list. When you sign up, you can specify if you want the emails to be sent to you (hint: DON'T) or if you want to read them on the site. Bookmark the site. Your inbox will be flooded if you choose to have the emails sent to you. You can post emails direct from the site when you have something to give away and you can read postings there when you need something. If you are concerned about security, you can leave the items on your porch/driveway or front yard for them to pick up so you do not have to open your door to strangers. You get to select who gets the item from anyone who responds to your posting.

Today a squirrel knocked on my door, well actually, he scratched at my patio doorwall. I heard the scratching and went to investigate. When I pulled back the curtain he scampered back so I could see him and sort of danced around cutely for me. Then he came closer and scratched the screen again. I remembered a handful of raw walnuts I had left in the kitchen and got them and threw them out to my waiting friend. He was so cute scampering after the nuts. I am sure he brought all his buddies later as he has done in the past, but I had errands to do and had to leave. Next time I will take pictures. I am picturing the little begger going from doorwall to doorwall in my complex and knocking on everyone's door. I sure he lives a good life.
Thanks to my squirrel friend today I decided to post one good thing for each pet peeve that sets me off. So, thanks for reading my bit of fun this morning with my nutty buddy.
