In case someone has not heard of Freecycle.org, I cannot think of an easier way to declutter your home and at the same time give someone something useful that they need. If you are like me, you probably have lots of stuff lying around that is in great shape, that you never use and probably never will. Making the trip to Goodwill to drop it off is out of the way or you wait for a larger pile. Freecycle folks come to you to pick it up. With today's economy, there are lots and lots of people in need. This is neighbor helping neighbor, and keeps usable items out of the landfills. Have company coming and need an extra table or chair or such? Perfect - most lists will let you post a want a couple of times a month And, you can Freecycle the item back to someone else in need if you do not have the storage space when you are done with it.
Freecycle uses a Yahoo Group mailing list. When you sign up, you can specify if you want the emails to be sent to you (hint: DON'T) or if you want to read them on the site. Bookmark the site. Your inbox will be flooded if you choose to have the emails sent to you. You can post emails direct from the site when you have something to give away and you can read postings there when you need something. If you are concerned about security, you can leave the items on your porch/driveway or front yard for them to pick up so you do not have to open your door to strangers. You get to select who gets the item from anyone who responds to your posting.
Lots of folks now are looking for the clothes your kids have outgrown for back to school. all in all a win/win for you, your neighbors and the environment. Give it a try - http://www.freecycle.org/
